What size is your Orb? Orbs don’t make great marine tanks – very small volume and the shape means very few fish or invertebrates or corals are suitable.
The RO water means reverse osmosis and can be bought with premixed salt from any good marine aquatics shop.
I would recommend picking up a few books on marine keeping before you venture into this hobby, an Orb may not be your best option for a first marine tank!
RO water is reverse osmosis water…you can buy yourself a RO unit at fish stores, but they’re pretty expensive…well over $100 from what I’ve seen online.
For a marine tank, you don’t really need a filter. A regular freshwater tank has a colony of bacteria living in the filter media that converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrtate so your fish don’t die from a buildup of ammonia. You can add live sand and live rock in a saltwater tank(they’re not really live, they just have live bacteria growing on it) to do the same thing. Make sure you cure it first so there’s actually bacteria living on it…try googling this and picking a guide you like.
The bad thing about having a marine tank with a biorb is that smaller tanks are more sensitive to mistakes you make. Adding a little bit extra salt or overfeeding a bit of food will have a bigger impact on a small tank than a bigger one with more water. If you’re new to keeping fish, I would suggest going freshwater first before trying saltwater. You save long-term too…those prepared salt mixes are pretty expensive, especially since you need to use it every single time you change your tank water.
Good luck with your biorb and grats on the gift :P
