Is a Hawkeye Aquariums AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit only for beta fish?

6 September 2010 2 Comments

I want a fish tank for my dorm in the fall and i saw this one at pet'smart and liked it cause of the changing light and it comes with all its accessories, but as i was reading comments on it online and most people use it for beta fish.

I want to have small goldfish between 2-4 fish, but will it be alright? ..

There is no such thing as a small goldfish. What most people don’t realize is that fancy goldfish grow to about 6 inches long, and comets grow up to twice that. This tank is way too small for goldfish, which are considered terribly messy fish. You could try Otocinclus catfish, possibly a few small tetras such as green neons, or African dwarf frogs, as well as betta splendens. But please, before rushing out and buying this small but admittedly nice tank, read a good article on the nitrogen cycle. Your animals may live through a full cycle, but it will have lastig effects on their health. Also, make sure the kit comes with ALL the accessories: filter and media (a hang-on-back type is preferable), heater, thermometer, air pump and diffuser, substrate, dechlorinator, etc. If you can’t afford a liquid test kit, buy the strips. They are cheap, but take the results with a grain of salt. For a betta, ph should be neutral to slightly acidic (6.5) but most of all stable, water should be fairly soft, ammonia and nitrites obviously 0, and nitrates about 5 ppm, with weekly water changes of 30% ( don’t get lazy, these are important!) Good luck!

i considered getting that one, the lights are really cool.
but i think you will pretty much hafta rule out the goldfish idea seeing as it is a smallish tank and they can get pretty big.
but bettas are perfect, or you can get small schooling fish like neon tetras, or guppies, or an african dwarf frog. those are really fun
but theres a ton of small fish that would be perfect in that tank
