How do you know if a betta fish is male or female?

9 August 2010 12 Comments

On Thursday I got a betta fish, and I really don't know if it is a male or female!
My betta fish is red, has straight blueish silvery strips, and his/her fins are medium.

    Males: bright colours such as: blue, red, purple, i’ve even seen YELLOW!
    Femaes: Dull colours such as: white, off white, I’ve even seen BLACK!!

    If you bought te fish in a cup, it’s probably a male (they keep them seperate in the store for obvious reasons). However, if you bought it out of a tank (like a worker @ the pet store had to fish it out) then most likely it’s a female (females can live get along fne with other females, but males can’t get along with other males that’s why another name 4 them are Japanese Fighting Fish!!)

    females are NOT dull. I have a whole tank of females I have two bright blues, a turquoise, one red and teal, one plain red, one teal and white, and one yellow.

    males have longer fins and beards at their gills that they flare out. females have a white tube on their bellies and are usually fatter.

    Look at the color. Males are colorful (to attract a mate), females are very bland looking without the long fins.

    http://freshaquarium.about.com/b/a/149745.htm Look at the pictures and then compare it to yours, Male have longer fins than females and remember you can only keep one male

    females have this little thing that is the size of a small pencil led tip called an ovipositor — its where the eggs come out. its located inbetween the fins on the bottom. females also get horizontal stripes when they are ready to breed.

    in general males have longer fins — however short finned males do exist.

    Most of the beta fish on sale are males.

    The males have long flowing tails and fins. While the female is typically drab with regular tails.

    Lol, regular tails.

    Males have flowing fins, similar to a fantail, and can flare up if they see anything they don’t like;

    Females are more like a torpedo in shape ~ if they are stressed they will be a dull gray color but when they are settled in they will be as colorful as the males (if not more colorful)

    Once again Kylie is correct. Males have longer fins than females. Females also have a egg spot. Here is a few pics. Females..
