Which fish is best for a baby biOrb, danios, guppies, bettas or harlequins?

26 July 2010 9 Comments

I asked on Y!A yesterday and someone recommended harlequins, danios and guppies and I heard bettas are okay in there too. But which is better? Which has more of a chance of being happy there and living long? And how many could I get?

Thanks in advance & I know the baby biOrb was a terrible choice but I can't take it back.
thank you!

The betta is the only fish on that list that should be in this tank. The other fish are schoolers and need enough space for a group to thrive, and danio’s especially are super active. Just not good recommendations.

Harlequins can be kept in the big biorb.

That tank is 4 gallons and round like a bowl – enough for either 1 betta or a few guppies.

If you put a few plants and hiding spots in the tank though, you can keep some ghost shrimp with your betta. Sometimes it doesn’t work so well, but they are cheap enough to be worth trying.

I would just have about 10 white cloud mountain minnows as they don’t need a heater and are colourful but if you have a betta then just get 5 minnows.

I wouldn’t bother with the harlequins, danios or guppies as you would need a heater plus you can’t have to many of these either.

Harlequins, danios, and guppies are all community fish and should be kept in bigger groups than a 4 gallon would allow. Plus, danios are extremely active swimmers and need a lot of swimming space; a twenty is the minimum to allow proper swimming space. Make sure you get a mini heater. As long as you have a heater and can maintain the correct water temperature, a single betta is your best option, maybe with a shrimp or two.

def a betta! you can get crowntail ones or keep a group of females but it wouldd be better for you to get just 1

platies are one of the best, as they are hardy colourful and inexpensive. Guppies are good but can not go with bettas, I would say 6 platies or guppies. Dont bother with harlequins or danios, total waste of time! I would therefore recomend 6 guppies or 6 platies or 3 platies and a male betta
P.S The baby biorb was a good choice, as in my view it has thebest filtration available, its beautiful, and good for looking after the babys(fry)from platies. Great choice!

The thing with biorbs is they were designed in China for showing off a single Betta. That is what they are meant for, they are a piece of furniture.

Nothing that likes to swim in a current can be happy in a bowl and because Betta breathe from the surface, there’s no need for gas exchange, hence minimal surface area, which is no good for any fish that uses it’s gills,

The ceramic substrate which is part of the filter doesn’t support bottom dwellers; it wasn’t designed for that and there isn’t enough of it anyway.

The only fish happy is a biorb is a male Betta; females are more active and need more swimming space.

Hi depends very much on how many litres/gallons the orb is.
These fish are all schooling fish and need to be in schools of at least 6 to thrive well.
Guppies also need to be in a school of 6, and well they breed and breed and breed. So your orb is very quickly going to become over stocked.

To be honest I would just put the one betta in there. Since Betta are aggressive and territorial, and they live solitary lives (the males) this would be the only fish, to get.

I highly recommend danios – they are AMAZING fish and are really, really REALLY cheap!

They are really hardy and can withstand a huge range of water situations and temperatures. Get around 4-6 fish as they MUST be in a school.

They are referred to as "fish on crack". They are REALLY REALLY active – constantly swimming up, down, right and left. Feed them sparingly and watch them lived up your biOrb!!!

Other fish can suffer in a small tank, but danios definetly don’t. You can get them in zebra, leopard and even pearlescent varieties along with albino varieties of all of the above. Mix and match as you like as they’ll all school together and make an excellent display for you!

    Good luck!
