What is growing in bottom of my fish tank how to get rid of it? ?
I own 4 bettas...2 with own tank one pair share a tank with divider. All 2.5 gallons. have had for 2months now. Thought maybe it was cycling through (a bacteria growth) but no change yet. I have cleaned out each tank and cleaned the cages/accessories/rocks w boiling water and then didn't put the accessories back in. I had had a 2.5-5gal whisper power filter in each tank...but didn't do anything... so brought back. Have been removing 20% of the water once a week and filling back up with fresh water/conditioning drops. I feed 1-2 pellets a day and 1 piece of bloodworm each.
I can email photos if curios what looks like. Description wise looks like a thick cloud at bottom of tank that doesn't move. The bettas are not bothered by it's being there at all. It's greyish in color, no smell to tank.
Like I said I have 4 fish...2 share a tank with a divider.
2 have their own tank.
I have removed everything on 4 seperate occasions and boiled it all...I even put boiling hot water in the tank and let it sit for awhile with a lid on it to trap the heat, boiled the rocks, the former filters, the plastic plants...which I have since left out.
the fish have no growths or change in behavior or color bright and active as ever.

Is it like this? http://www.aquaticscape.com/articles/algae.htm#staghorn
2.5 gallons for 4 fish is WAY TOO SMALL!
There is a misconception that bettas don’t need lots of space.
You need to upgrade AT LEAST a 5-gallon tank.
Are you saying that after you’ve cleaned & boiled the gravels that all these white cloudy stuff came about?
I think it’s part of the cycling process.
If you can, try to buy a water testing kit.
Nothing ive ever heard of.
I have no answer for what it is. Is it in all of your tanks? Well, whatever it is I would suggest getting some temporary containers for the bettas and doing a complete water change. Make sure everything is cleaned well. Boil the rocks if you have to, do not use soap, very bad for fish, and replace the fish only after it is gone.
if it is blackish and thick and kind of chunky, it most likely is just feces build-up! depending on the amount of fish you have, feces can build up quickly and settle and algae and bacteria can grow. i dont believe there are any short term effects– just clean the tank regularly so that it doesnt give off harmful chemicals.
since Bettas breathe air, you should not be too concerned. Bettas live in very murky water in the wild. Since your description of the "growth" is not precise enough, I might just recommend filtering over char coal for a while. An anti-fungal (and bacterial) medication may be added to the tank. NEVER over-feed, just as much as they consume right away.
Watch the skin of your fish and see whether they get any fungal growth on their skin / scales.
CAN U TAKE OUT ALL THE GRAVEL AND BOIL IT. MAKE SURE TANK IS CLEAN, USE SALT IF U LIKE BUT RINSE WELL AFTER.
CLEAN ALL FILTERS ETC THOROUGHLY. I WOULD NOT USE CHEMICALS TO TRY TO REMEDY THIS. MIGHT KILL YOUR FISH TO.
is it a sort of slimy thing?
If it is I had that, I called the pet store and they said they didn’t know what it was.
I think it was off my banana lilly, that was the only thing inside the tank (&water)
Sorry if I am not much help
(I threw out the plant in that tank, washed the other ones)
Does your tank stink?
Because when I had this opague slime thing my tank stunk.
What I did was I washed my plants & threw out one of them.
You gotta keep cleaning them
Good Luck :)
