What fish can I have? 4 gallon tank, no tropical, beginner!?

I have a 4 gallon freshwater tank with an internal filter, I was wondering what fish can live in it happily? I know that Goldfish are not really an option for a tank of this size, so I have looked at Gobys and Betta fish... but I was wondering if there is an optimum low maintenance fish for this type of small tank, I don't really want tropical fish. Any suggestion about what my options are at this stage are greatly appreciated! :) Also, any help about the fish care, such as when to change the water and how to test ammonia levels and such is also useful. betta fish is prob your best bet, just the one though!!
they are low maintenance too….u should do a 25% water change each week to keep it working nicely…..before you put any fish in make sure your tank is cycled otherwise the fish will most prob die….there are lots of sites which explain cycling your tank

White cloud minnows would probably be the best option. 4-5 would be fine in that tank. Another fish that would work is a paradise fish, which is the cool water equivalent to a betta.

Sorry, but the only fish that can live happily in that small of a tank is a tropical fish. The betta fish.
You need a heater to keep the water at a steady 78-80 degrees F, which will run around $15 for that size of a tank.
Betta is the BEST fish for a beginner, and the only one that will thrive in your small tank. Go get a heater, set up your tank, look up how to cycle the tank, and within a month or so you can get your betta.
If you get a betta and it’s cold where you live, you may end up needing to get a heater.
Technically they are tropical fish, but if you keep them about 70f I think it is, they will be fine.
But a betta would do well with an extra gallon, if that’s all you have that should be fine!
Get a fish you like, not just because they fit your tank.
And most of the fish people suggested are schooling fish, meaning you need more then usual because they group.
Bettas are good solitary fish.
Some possibility are guppies, glofish, betta, and anything in the category. Tetras are also good. Its really hard to get non tropical fish because most are.

Only one betta fish will live happily in that tank as long as it’s fully established, with a sponge filter, and has a heater set to 80F. You cannot keep anything else in that tank except maybe a snail.

When it’s cycled, only then may you add your fish. Yes, it will take a long time because you’re keeping such a tiny amount of water, which are harder to maintain than larger.
You should do a 25% water change every week. Buy a water testing kit, the liquid kind as the strips are inaccurate.
