Gravel:
One five pound bag of this pink gravel: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3571147&ab=fish_fc3b
…mixed with…
One ten pound bag of this black gravel (second picture): http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3262881&lmdn=Color
Background: Black
Decor and plants:
A little off to the left side of the tank–this ornament: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752227&lmdn=Fish+Decor
With these two plants behind and to the left of it: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3096774&lmdn=Product+Type
A little off to the right side of the tank–these three plants staggered in a group: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3054539&keepsr=0&clickid=body_rv_img
And three of the mini hot pink and purple plant around the base of those larger plants (second picture): http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3859661&lmdn=Fish+Decor
With 7 male fancy guppies of various colors–the brighter the color the better they will stand out against the above decor. Go for silver/white based ones rather than those with black and dark blue. Good examples (obviously choices will vary greatly):

other people’s ideas would be their ideas..not yours.
you need to sit down and think what you like and plan.
Well in my 75 gallon I wanted some real nice looking decos so I went to the store and saw that slate for a tank was SUPER expensive. Bummed me out. Sooo I went to a gravel place and noticed that they had slate outside their fence, I took a few small pieces since it wasnt even on their property anymore. I soaked them in vinegar for a week (threw out the pieces that bubbled because that means calcium) and soaked it in water for a week. Tadah!! I had some beautiful rocks to work with. You can use aquarium silicone and make some really neat creative structures out of them.

I then went on ebay and bought some anubias plants for like $1 each!!! Beautiful and hardy plants. Nice big green leaves. The fishies LOVE real plants, and this guy here is really good for shipping them alive. You just put them in the gravel and done!

Also driftwood is really really nice in an aquarium but if you don’t want to spend much it can be pricy.

So you could put like plants in your one corner with maybe a small plant pot on its side (for the guppies to hide in when they want to get away). and then you could put a piece of slate on the right side with your filter or a piece of bamboo as long as half of it is out of the water.
^_^ hope I gave you an idea!!
no… not black and hot purple or stuff like that unless your some kind of emo kid.
if you’re gonna get a brigh coloured fish, don’t get bright coloured gravel – it could be a lot more effective to buy dark gravel and a vibrant coloured fish (eg neon tetras + bettas) that would contrast the dark gravel.
big long plants would look nice, or ones with wide leaves…
i would definitley not make the colours pink and black my main colour scheme in a tank though, lol…

that’s what my tank looked like. i added in more black gravel, to totally bury all the plants roots. and i also added in another plant between the wood and the tall plant at the back. (all the plants in pots are not planted in the gravel)
I love the all black gravel with a small amount of fluorescent-colored gravel mixed in, too! : -) But I use lighter colored shells for some contrast. I always use the shells you buy for hermit crabs, since they are sterilized, clean/dust-free, and intended for pet use. I also use live plants – anacharis and water wisteria are my favorites. Also, for a small fish like a guppy, Wal-mart sells a small multi- fluorescent-colored cave (I’ve seen them at every Wal-mart I’ve been too, and they are inexpensive) that would be great. I have them in my betta setups, and the bettas love them! Also, I have an air bubbler that I love – it is a bright pink fake anemone and with an air stone inside, and it makes all kinds of bubbles. I *believe* I got it at Petsmart.
Ok, a few notes here from someone that did it wrong on my first few tries.
Be sure to get some sort of COVER for the tank. It’s best to fill the tank all the way up close to the top, but it also gives the fish a chance to jump out. So, a cover or some sort of netting is a requirement.
Next, it’s nice to have a light on top of the tank. Fish need the light to be healthy. I used to have a light cover that held two bulbs in place. One was a regular bright white light and the other was a black light that I would sometimes turn on at night.
Also, buy a thing you put behind the tank on the outside that has a design or picture on it. I had one with a deep sea scene on it, and it sort of made the tank look much bigger than it actually was.
Finally, the gravel and stuff is great. You will also need some plastic plants and other structures for the fish to hide in. Also, plastic plants or plastic seaweed that can float at the top of the tank is a must have, as the guppies will actually give birth to itty bitty guppies…but they like to do so at the top of the tank in with some privacy. The fake plants on top also make it possible for the new born guppied to stay out of the way of the adult guppies…which will eat the young ones if they are exposed!
Finally, one of my favorite things in a fish tank was the old fashioned "deep sea diver" with a treasure chest nearby.
Instead of the crazy gravel, try just grayish-white. It looks more natural and shows off the tails of the male guppies! Anyways, I’ll just say what my tank looks like because I can’t think of any other way right now;)….
Red, white, and green gravel (more so red) mixed together.
Rock decoration on the left, algae growing on it for my snails and catfish;)
Two large, green plants on either back corner, and smaller purple, black, and yellow plants in front.
Rock on left with one plant, filter water in middle and empty swimming space, and on the left I have a little sea of plants and algae.
The backround is from Petsmart, it’s bright blue with a coral reef in back…
My tank is REALLY bright, eye catching. Hope I gave you some ideas.
