Why wouldnt my fish tank filter pull water through after cleaning the tank?

11 May 2010 6 Comments

i cleaned int inside of it when i was cleaning the tank, so there arent any visible clogs or anything that would block water flow. the filter is plugged into socket that works and it has water in it. it is fairly new, less than a year, so i would hope that it would not need to be replaced this early. any suggestions on things to check?

Depending on what type of filter it is, it could be a couple of different things. If it is similar to the Whisper type of filters, check and make sure the impeller is spinning. I occasionally have to "re-start" my impeller after turning the filter off for other maintenance. Sometimes they will get a little something in there that stops them from turning at first. If that is the case, just remove the tube to expose the impeller, and give it a little spin. If it starts spinning again, just replace the suction tube and it should start drawing water.

You should try cleaning the impeller. It’s part of the motor that looks like a little propeller on the end of a cylindrical magnet. If this gets too dirty, it won’t spin and the filter can’t suck in water. Check your manual (if you saved it) for instructions on finding and removing the impeller. Just clean it by hand under running water, making sure it can spin freely on its axle. In hang-on-the-back box filters (e.g. Penguin or Whisper), you’ll need to remove the intake tube to find the impeller. In canister filters (e.g. Fluval or Rena XP), the impeller is inside the canister head (the top part where the tubes go in). You shouldn’t need any tools to access and remove the impeller.

Pump got a air lock. Fill the pump with water first before switching it on.

Did you clean the propeller looking part? If I don’t take the one out and clean it every time I do my partial water change mine filter won’t work either.
