What are good community freshwater aquarium fish?

30 May 2010 3 Comments

I have a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium. In it are 5 angelfish, 1 clown loach, 1 red tailed black shark, and a small pleco. What are some good community freshwater fish that will go well with these fish. I would like them to be active colorful fish. Also if you have any tips on keeping freshwater aquarium plants alive it would be greatly appreciated. My plant keep dying after about 2 weeks in the tank.

well that tank is way overstocked. a 30 gallon tank would be good for maybe 2 angel fish at the most. the clown loach will get very big and will need a bigger tank and so will the pleco. both the pleco and clown loach will need 55 gallons minimum.

You could add a school of about 10 tetras (any kind you like) or Glo-Fish. Put some CO2 in the water and see how your plant does then. Also, make sure you have a light in your tank specifically for plants. I hope your plant doesn’t die again and I hope you fish live a long, happy life!

You already have too much fish in this tank I’m afraid.

The Angels will get 12" tall and 5"-6" long a piece, a 30g can just about house a pair, but NOT 5 adults, they’ll kill each other.

Clown Loaches are shoaling fish that shouldn’t be kept alone. They get up 12" long, but it takes them about 12-15 years to get full grown, and they can easily live over 20 years. They are a long term commitment and a shoal of them need at least a 6-10ft long tank.

The Red Tailed Black Shark is really too active for a 30g, gets 6" and really needs a minimum of a 55g tank.

What kind of Pleco? There are over 800 species, of which only a very small portion are suitable for a 30g tank.

As for the plants, some plants can be more work to keep than fish! They need good lighting and fertilisers to thrive, some plants are higher maintenance than others.
