bettas breathe at the top of the water so they like to hang out up there a lot.

what you are describing might be ammonia poisoning though. if you think he is spending too much time at the top you could try changing the water. bettas love a frequent water change.

the airbubble by the gills i have never witnessed. you can go to nippyfish.net and see some pictures of common betta illnesses so if your fish gets one you will know.

that may not be an air bubble it could be a tumor. He probably won’t be around much longer…sorry

Males build "bubble nests" for females to lay their eggs in…you don’t need a female for a male to exhibit this behaviour. If you think your fish is dying, try putting some salt (not a whole lot) in his water. Sometimes this is enough to "shock" some life back into him. I once had a betta whose bowl fell off the shelf (helped by my cat). When I went to pick him up he was within a mm of becoming sushi…he lived for another 3 years without a tail. I’ve never had a betta live that long…Good luck!

I had one as a teenager and when he stay near the top it was not long when he pass away.
they like small tanks and are not big swimmers.
unless his in a devived tank with a female alone his not building a nest

you can buy drops to treat some condishion for fish ask a fish shop or vet
