fish tank maintenance?
I have an older fish tank, 44 gallons, and the light flickers on and off with a new light bulb. The starter thing looks like it flickers too when im trying to turn it on. not sure what to do. Buy a new starter? The new light bulb worked fine for a little then was flickering like the old one, i noticed that when i picked up the light at the hood of the tank, if i tilt it at a certain angle it will stay on for a while without flickering, its when i put it into place that it goes on and off again. I've found people with similar problems, but have had no real answers. Please help. If the starter needs to be replaced, does anyone know what standard price they run for? Thanks

Very likely its the starter thats causing the problem. I dont live in the US but they shouldnt be expensive, here they are around $4 or $5.

The fact that when you lift it and tilt it just so makes it work better lead me to believe it’s more than likely an electrical issue though.
Keep the recipt for the starter and if it’s not the solution you should be able to return it and see about getting a new light system all together.

Edit: That will vary greatlly on the system you are interested in, with mediocre being around $50, and really good upwards of $100. I paid about $100 for my Jebo lighting system, less S&H and about $100 in store for my GLO T5 HO lighting. The Jebo is far better quality and has a higher output than the GLO, but I was impatient and bought what I could find in store. Moral of the story, shop around if you have to get a whole new system, you can usually get a good steal on line. I found my bargain on ebay : )
It could be the start or a loose/older wire. Open it up and look for wires with cracked coatings, or burn marks and replace. If all else fails get a new starter, or a new light.
Light costs vary depending on what type of light you want.
