Can male betta fish be alone without females?

5 May 2010 17 Comments

I remember reading somewhere that you should never have a male betta fish alone. I should be with at least 4 females. Is this true?

I’ve kept bettas alone, and I’ve kept them with other fish. They don’t just automatically kill every other fish. If the other fish has a long, flowing tail, they view that as competition and may try to attack.

The bettas I kept alone all did perfectly fine. He may start building a bubble nest, though, and that shows the betta may be ready to have baby fish. If you do that, do NOT put just one female in with him, because he may kill her. Have about 3 females so he spreads his focus out over all of them.

Yeah! I have a blue male betta and he loves being alone! If you add her he will try to fight her!

No. Male betas live better alone because they might fight other fish.
I keep my male betas in separate bowls.

Beta fish need to be alone, male or female. They will fight to the death if you put them together……..not cool

Bettas are known to kill each other even when put on two ends of a lake.

Male betta fish are fine by themselves… if you put a female in with him, you will have little betta’s and the male fish will become aggressive towards the female betta.

I have a male and a female in one tank but there is a divider that separates them so we only have to have one tank. Works great!

Betas are loners they like being alone. But i did have a beta of my own before it died of old age and i did have other fish in the tank with it. So it can be in a tank with other fish but NEVER 2 male betas together. If the beta was alone before than im sure it will be fine. But like i said betas are aggressive so they are use to being alone.

Well i have a beta and he is a male, he is in a tank all by himself
with nothing else in his tank and i have had him for a couple of weeks and he is ok without any females with him so i think he will be fine without any females only if, there is nothing else in the tank or he will attack and maybe even kill your other fish.

lol.. no .. as you know they will fight till one of them dies.. so dont do that…

    no, not true at all…

    he will be fine alone

add ghost shrimp or dwarf frogs if he isnt too aggressive and the tank is big enough

never mix male bettas with any other bettas unless you have plans to breed two bettas
