What is the best low-maintenance fish to get?

4 April 2010 73 views 7 Comments

I would like to get a small fish tank (something to hold 2-3 fish) to entertain my dog when I'm gone to work. I'm not worried that he'll get into their tank, or tip them over or anything. I'd like something that is REALLY low maintenance. Something that the tank doesn't require frequent cleaning, etc.

Also, the best place for me to put this tank would be on an end table where there is a lamp. The lamp is only on for a few hours in the evening, but would the heat generated by the lamp be an issue?

I dont think that your dog would really care much for a tank with fish. He would only be interested in the tank for maybe 5 mins then just walk away bored.

If you really want to entertain your dog with fish you are going to need a huge tank with monster fish to catch his eye. Examples like arowana’s or oscars.

There really is no such thing as a low maintenance tank just lazy owners. You have to do water changes for fish, no way around it. Imagine swimming in a pool that you poop and pee in everyday, you may have a filter that cleans up the water but it still stinks.

If you want to entertain your dog buy him toys or invest in another dog.

A betta fish, I’ve had mine for a year now, I clean out his fish bowl like once a month and it doesn’t get real dirty. I also just get a gallon of spring water from the store and put him in a cup, clean his bowl out, pour the new water in and dump him back in there without letting him adjust to the temperature and he is just fine everytime. They are indestructable.

IMO – Betta fish. They don’t even need a filter system. Crowntail bettas are in most pet stores and look awesome. You can feed them as little as once a week. Just one fish per bowl though, they fight to the death right away. I have several in my house in glass vases with a plant on top, the roots in the water. It’s a good eco-system – all the fish and the plants are thriving 2 years later.
