My coldwater fish tank went cloudy after adding the fish?

7 April 2010 5 Comments

I was advised to set up the tank 1 week in advance which I did-then bought 2 single tail goldfish and after 48hours the water went cloudy-what will I do?

Your tank needs to cycle. Just setting up a tank doesn’t do anything to start the cycle. You must add a source of ammonia so that the bacteria have a source of food. Do 25-50% water changes everyday to every other day to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels from getting too high. Though technically anything above 0ppm is bad.
This should clear up in about a month as the bacterial colonies grow.

P.S. Comet Goldfish need large tanks (around 55 gallons) and a TON of filtration. They get a bout a foot long when not stunted, and are fairly messy.

If you have a filter make sure it’s working properly. I would give the tank another day or two to clear up. If this hasn’t cleared by then, you might want to go to your local pet store and buy an algae eater and a ph adder(or something along those lines ask your pet shop) to stabilize the water.

What size is your tank? It sounds like the tank is cycling, which is very natural, and happens to every new tank. Just leave it for a few days and it should clear up, unless the tank is not large enough to support the goldfish.
