yeah use a gravel vacuum u buy at the pet store. Use up and down motion on the gravel to take out all that gunk, while taking out 20%-30% of water into a bucket. U can use filtered water from the sink but if its connected to a water softener then don’t use it because the salt in the softener is not good for the fish. If this is the case use the water from outside your house.

p.s. – u didn’t have to mention ur fiancee’s in jail, just that he was unavailable…….

Well see if he has a siphon. Those are like a long hose like thing and is used to clean the bottom of the tank like the excess waste and extra food. If not, get one. Or just do a 25-50% water change…. Always leave some of the old water in the tank. =]

use a gravel cleaner and remove 20-25% of the water and replace it with dechlorinated water

Yes you can use the water from the sink, but you need to add water conditioner to it. One brand is Stress Coat. Stress Coat and a gravel vacuum if you don’t already have one are only a couple dollars each. Siphon about 25% out, sucking all the debris from the bottom, and replace with tap water that is close to the same temperature as the tank water. Just make sure you add the water conditioner to take out chorine and chloramine.

do like a 10% water change every week or so. Get a liquid that takes the chlorine out of the water so that they fish won’t die!
Filtered water from your sink may have some chemicals that can be harsh for the fish!
