Which fish can I put in with my Betta?

11 March 2010 12 Comments

Hi,
My Betta fish is lonely... I just bought him from a pet store in which he was in a tank with plenty of other fish. I believe some of them were Darios, Tetra etc. I want a fish that has the same requirements as him, but one that he won't maul. Please help! He's depressed...
Thank you!

its a common myth that male bettas are too aggressive to be housed with any other fish, this is NOT the case, plenty of fish species will do fine with your betta, try to get fish that aren’t colorful and don’t have long flowy fins, the point is to make the new fish look as "not-betta-like" as possible, so he won’t feel the need to attack them, someone mentioned Neon Tetras which is a good idea. All Betta’s are different though so it really depends on the individual fish whether or not he will tolerate tank mates.

As far as I know, if it is a male Betta, nothing can go in the tank with him. I have had three (all in seperate tanks) and they were fine. I wouldn’t worry about him being depressed. He is probably just getting use to his new home:)

Try some Neon tetras. They won’t bug the Betta or nip his fins. If he’s been socialized with other fish then I’m sure they’ll get along. Make sure your tank is a little more cycled before you throw them in though, they’re a little sensitive.

first, betta fish usually don’t get lonely but getting another fish would be ok if you want one. a good animal is an african dwarf frog. they are small and live totally underwater and are very cute and quirky. just be careful because some betta fish are more aggressive but i haven’t had any problems with mine beating on each other. here is a great site with info and pics on ADFs:

instead of sitting here and guessing which type of fish you can put with the betta and taking a risk of having dead fish, you should go to the pet store and ask which would be the best to live with your betta.

i hear that neons and sucker fish are the best tank buddies for bettas.

thats what i had with mine.

Its always the safest way to find out which would be the best match!

While you can keep betta with other fish, they are also generally happy to live alone.

If he looks depressed check the water temperature and quality first. Cool water will make the betta lethargic, ammonia buildup in the water will just make it sick.

If you want tankmates you will need a tank of 10gal or bigger and the correct heating and filtering. Then small short finned community fish like Neons and Cory catfish are good choices.

Don’t put neon tetras in with him because they are fin nippers. If you just recently got him he would be about 3 months old and is still developing his fins so it’s very important for his fins not to be nipped at or they won’t develop correctly. So I think the best fish to put him in with would be cardinal tetras because they tend not to nip. You could also try putting 3 Corie’s in there, they wouldn’t do much but they would probably keep your betta company. Hope this helps!!

Sorry, but most of these people are wrong!!!!
They all tell you that male bettas can’t live with other fish, but i keep my beautiful red male betta with 4 Corydoras Catfish, neon tetras are beautiful, but if your fish is particularly aggressive, then i would chose you didn’t, my fish ate mine ….
    :S
but fish that could live with him are
    Black phantom tetras
    Catfish
    Some Loaches
    Ghost Shrimp
    White Cloud Mountain Minnows
there are many more, but i guess od i do not remember all of them…
some tetras are good to keep with Bettas, do not listen to all these people saying that you should keep bettas alone, my betta was depressed and didnt eat for a while, until i got him some friends.
He now thrives and swims around and loves it.
    I hope i helped a bit

there are many fish that are compatible as betta tankmates. The four rules that you can use to determine whether a fish is compatible are

    1) Not colorful or resemble a rival betta’s colors (guppies)
    2) Not a fin nipper (Tiger barbs are a big NO)
    3) The right size for the size of the tank (No common plecos in a 10 gallon tank since they get to 2 feet in length)
    4) Lives roughly in the same water conditions as a betta (no brackish/saltwater fish)
