These beautiful fish grow to about 4", so should ideally have at least a 10 gallon tank. A filter with minimum aeration would be ideal, but not absolutely necessary if proper maintenance is done.
Temp: room temp, about 65-75ยบ F, but can survive in cooler temps, too.
pH: 6.8 – 8.0, so slightly above neutral.
    Hardness: 4.0 -18.0
Substrate: dark gravel. The larger the gravel, the easier it is to clean the tank.
Weekly 10-15% water changes need to be done.
Plants: provide some surface plants like duckweed or Java fern. I’d suggest getting 2-3 small bamboo plants, but ludwigia and water wisteria or both attractive plants. And of course you can always use "betta bulbs". If using artificial plants, use silk, not plastic.
Never keep in brightly lit areas. If necessary, provide shade from bright lights.
Try placing some plastic marbles that sink to the bottom for him to play with.
Keep in mind that paradise fish are carnivores, and enjoy the thrill of hunting live food occasionally. Examples are wingless fruit flies, small crickets, brine shrimp, and even fish fry. Other good food sources are Betta bites, frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp and tubifex worms, and similar items.
Being anabantids like Bettas and gouramis, these supplement their oxygen from the air. They also build bubblenests. They’re not as aggressive as Betta splendens, and a male and female can often be kept together.
There are blue, red, and albino forms of the Macropodus opercularis, which is the pf usually seen in pet stores. All are beautiful.

Well, that’s pretty much the ideal aquarium and care.

I would say 10 gallons minimum well planted with a temperature of about 18c
