question regarding cleaning fish tank?

14 March 2010 3 Comments

I have a 10 gallon tank, and yesterday I changed 50% of the water. I cleaned the filter and today the water is cloudy. I have realized the filter was old, and not working well. today i put in a new filter. Do I need to do another water change, or will the new filter clear up the water?

you shouldn’t have to change the water with the new filter

You should only be doing 25% water changes at a time, and no more than that, unless you need to clear up the ammonia, or lower the pH/nitrite/nitrate. If you have just set up your fish tank, your tank may be suffering from new tank syndrome. This is when all the levels in your tank are all faulty, from not being set up and running for at least three days, so therefore an ammonia spike is caused, as well as a nitrate spike. If you have already cycled your tank, then yes, the new filter should be clearing up everything in your tank.

give the new filter a few days to do its job. the pet shops sell drops for cloudy water.
