BiOrb has black algae on tube. How do I clean it?

13 March 2010 2 Comments

I have a BiOrb fish tank and I have that black algae stuff on the tube. The black stuff has killed 3 fish in my tank. I want to clean it off but I want to do it the correct way. I need HELP and fast because I want to do this as soon as possible! Thank you so MUCH!

Algae doesn’t kill, but algae can be a sign of excess nutrients, if you’re over stocked and you have bad water quality, that’ll kill fish!

Use a cheap toothbrush to get the algae off the tube. The only "poisonous algae" is cyanobacteria, or green slime algae, but not many fish or inverts are dumb enough to try and eat it!

This stuff is really hard to get off. I had some on a fake log in my tank and when I was scrubbing it under warm water it seemed impossible because of the rough surface. There is no chemicals or ‘right’ way to get it off. It is caused by low light and lots of nutrients in the water (overfeeding and fish waste). I’d try not feeding your aquarium so much and give it more light. As for scrubbing the already black algae off: get a hard sponge and go at it. It shouldn’t be too hard to scrub off a smooth surface.
