Used 30 Gallon Fish Tank, What do I need???

21 February 2010 164 views 8 Comments

Hi there.
I just purchased a really nice 30 gallon tank and accessories and am wondering if I’m missing anything. Since it’s used it doesn’t have any manuals or anything and I’m wanting to make sure I’m not missing anything before I get started. I currently have a little 5 gallong aquarium that doesn’t require so much..
Here is what I have
30 gallon aquarium (measures 30 1/8 x 22 1/2 x 12 1/4)
Stand
Eclipse hood, light and filter system
Python clean and fill kit
Theo submersible heater
Gravel x 30lbs
Plants and decorations
Some chemicles including Ph Balancer and Water Conditioner
…I think that’s all.
Am I missing a Pump or is that included in the filter system? And if so what kind of pump should I buy.
Please tell me if there is anything else I need so I can grab it today while at the pet store.
I have done my homework for a while on how to set up a 30 gallon tank, but now that I have it I want to do everything correct
Thanks!
I actually just found the owners manual on the Eclipse site, but thanks! yay! Now I just have to figure out where to put this big thing. excited*

LOL, surprisingly everyone has missed a master test water kit.

Sounds like a complete kit there.

You NEED, tank, heater, filter and water conditioner, the others are optional extras.

You dont need to have an air pump if you have a power filter, but it does no harm to add one to the tank for extra aeration, water circulation and to make pretty bubbles if you are into that.

I have the exact tank you just bought, hold on, I’m looking for the owner’s manual.

The eclipse system is filtration only. You’ll need an air pump and air stones.

The gallon size is noted on the pump box. If you go to a specialized fish store, they’ll show you a good one.

This is the website for the Eclipse manufacturers.
They have lots of info, and you can contact them directly if the website can’t answer your questions.

If the filter is an external then you don’t need a pump unless you want to run an airstone or decorations. You’ll need to get new filter media to get going so write down what type of filter it is to get the right size foam and charcoal.

Yep that’s all you need to start it up.

Cycling the tank is next step.

    Then fish.

    Enjoy!

Seems like you have all the bits, only thing I would add is a bottle of methylene blue.

You don’t know the tank and fittings history so a dose of anti fungicide before you start to cycle would be a wise precaution.

I’ve also found with second hand buys, you need to be prepared to replace parts fairly quickly, (the lighting tube and starter normally go first).

The cycle will take at least two weeks, so in that time you will be able to spot defects and alter things to suit yourself.

Good luck and have fun :0)

You need a air pump to circulate the air and provide oxygen for your fish. my fish were slow moving and miserable until i added a air pump and stone :0
