Tropical, low maintenance fish for 22 litre tank?

11 February 2010 4 Comments

I have recently bought a 22 litre fish tank and bouht tropical fish.
I made sure all the water ph, kh levels, etc. were perfect before I bought 4 fish; 2 clown loaches, 1 small catfish and a blue dwarf gourami.
First the gourami was killed by an aggressive loach a week after purchase, so i took the loach back an bought a new dwarf gourami, 2 new loaches and a silver shark.
They were fine for a week until I went away for 3 days and when I returned the catfish was a skeleton at the base of the tank, however he had been looking ill for a while, so it wasnt much of a surprise.
One day on, my dwarf gourami is laying against the wall at the bottom of the tank, and will only move when touched by the other fish.
He will probably die.

The loaches and the shark, however, are thriving, so I was wondering whether I should try another gourami or catfish or if i should just get some more sharks or another fish?

Thanks for the advice.

Forgot to add that each of the fish is no longer than 6cm being the shark, loaches + gourami are 4-5cm and the catfish was about 2-3 cm long. They are very small fish.
I reposted my question because i am thirteen years old and am being verbally abused because i just did what the aquarium people told me to do

They are small fish NOW, but are nowhere near their true adult size. All of the fish you have mentioned are very unsuitable for your tank size, and if you did indeed already ask this question, everyone has probably already told you this and it’s just not what you want to hear.

My advice? return ALL those fish, and do some researching about the aquarium nitrogen cycle and fish adult sizes and compatibility before buying new fish. You don’t buy a great dane puppy if you live in a one room apartment—it’s the same concept with fish, who can live longer than most dogs anyway. You have to choose responsibly with animals in accordance with the space you have to house them.

It may not be what you want to hear, but it’s the truth, with some cheese on it.

loaches and gouramis need to be in bigger tanks than 22L. 22 tanks should only have neons, or small barbs, either get a bigger tank, and im talking like 3ft, or swap your fish over to platys barbs or small tetras

Why did you delete your other question which had great answers?

Those small sharks and loaches will grow 30cm long and need minimum schools of 6. A 22 litre is only big enough for a single betta.

EDIT: Look sorry if I have been a bit rude. I just hate it when people don;t research first.

Advice, yeah, return all the fish, do some research into fish keeping, then buy a suitable sized tank and try again.

You have fish that should be starting to outgrow a 200L in 12 months, or they will die. There is no other advice I can give you that will keep those fish alive.
