Hi,

Usually Discus should be kept in “species only” tanks. They require warm (82F-86F), soft water that’s of a low pH (the temp alone excludes many potential tankmates). Also, Discus should never be kept with larg and/or aggressive fish (sorry, no angels).

A few fish, including Blue Rams, can be kept with Discus. There’s plenty more to say, but I’m running out of room. So, take a look at my article on Discus found on my blog (the link to my blog is found in the youtube description above)

If you want to keep Discus fish, do you have to keep them in a tank without any other species of tropical fish, such as Angels, Cichlids, etc?

Opinion on keeping discus is changing very rapidly. At a time many people believed that the only way to keep discus was in an aquarium with a low Ph. However much has changed and that is mainly to do with the amount of discus breeders out there. Many European bred discus can now thrive in Ph up to 7.5 but still require a peaceful aquarium. In short Discus are going much the same way that the Angelfish went before them and is becoming far more resilient.

hi how hard is it to keep discus and what sort of size can they grow is there any special way of keeping them ?
