is it bad cleaning your fish tank everyday?

3 February 2010 5 Comments

Because my mom works for someone that cleans her Siamese fighting fish everyday because she wants to make it clean and she puts lots of drops and it lives so short. Our fighting fish lived for about 2 years and just clean it like every 2 months ,

Can they die if you clean it everyday and put drops?

Thanks!

No it’s not bad if you do it properly. Discus growers who grow out young discus(who need pristine water quality) often do up to 40% water changes per day. For a betta, you only need to change it once a week(2-3 times if you don’t mind doing extra work). The bad thing about doing water changes too often is that is can damage your bacterial bed w/lots of beneficial bacteria, but 40%(although a lot) will be fine. If you have a bowl w/ a betta(2.5 gallons should be the minimum to give the fish a good home), 100% daily water changes will damage the bacterial bed.

By "drops" I’m assuming you mean water conditioner/dechlorinator. They simple remove chlorine and chloramines that kill your beneficial bacteria. Drops will do nothing if there is no bacteria inside the tank in the first place. If you have a small tank, you can get something from an established tank w/bacteria(handful of gravel, filter media) so your tank has bacteria.

Bacteria are needed for your tank because they convert harmful ammonia(released by all fish, including siamese fighting fish) into nitrite, and then into nitrate. Nitrate is less harmful and is removed when you do water changes. The amount of water changes you need to do is based on your tank size, amount of filtration(filter media provides a high surface area place for bacteria to grow), and bioload(fish wastes). The minimum you should do is 15-20% weekly. Bettas can actually live for a few years if treated properly.

    Good luck :D

Yes it is very bad to clean a fish tank daily.

If this fish is in a vase/cup/jar then that’s why the fish isn’t living long.

yes because when you change the water it takes out bacteria that the fish need only a 25 percent water change a week is necessary.

Yes it is bad because the tank is never stable

Bettas need 5+ gallons heated and filtered. In a 5+ gallon heated and filtered aquarium you should only need to do weekly 25% water changes.
