Hi, I really want to get an aquairium but I don’t really know what to get. I have 2 bettas right now (not together lol) and I really like having them so I think I’m ready to get tropical fish. I’d like to get an aquiarium that’s good looking, but not huge because I’m just starting. What do I need to know? What fish are good to get and which ones are bad? How do you clean the tank? Thanks

First, I would definitely read a little more into a tropical, freshwater aquarium (saltwater is WAY too hard to maintain) just so you know what you could be getting yourself into, good or bad :)
Personally, I would suggest a ten gallon aquarium kit for a starter as yourself. They’re usually very well adapted to any kind of freshwater fish you would want. Tropical wise, neon tetras are very attractive and relatively hardy as compared to other fish.
Decorations- I prefer a natural look but it is really up to you i.e. natural rocks, live plants, driftwood, etc.
Cleaning- Look around on other websites on tips for preparing a new aquarium and cleaning it. It’s a lot of information to cover everything on here in depth, haha!
Good luck!
Try a 5 gallon tank….it should come with a filter but you can clean it out once and a while just like you probably do with your betas. I would start out with some small simple goldfish to get the hang of it….then later (after they die…). The tropical fish are good too, but try for a small ones.
Good Luck ?
You might consider a biocube they run 150-200 and its all inclusive. I think its even set up to handle a mini reef not sure that may be a specialty type. Cleanings not hard they have magnetic scrub brush’s for algae and such. Also a siphon will help you drain it for water changes and stuff but salt is a whole other world much less reefs. Contact me if your in the market for salt but I dont have all day to type it up lol.
DONT GET GOLDFISH!!! the only suitable tank sizes for them would be like over 100 gallons because they get so big and produce so much waste. the best started tank is a 10 gallon. its not too small and not too big and it can be put on a stable dresser or something (always best to get a stand for it though-you dont want 10 gallons of fish and water all over your floor, lol). also, you want to let it run with the filter for a few weeks(add a little fish food every day) before adding fish to get all the good bacteria and things to start growing. the best fish for a 10 gallon would be one of your bettas, maybe 5 platies, 7 danios or small tetras or guppies, or a small group of any other fish that stays under an inch big. guppies are really hardy in my opinion. just dont get any females! they can store sperm and pop out little babies when you least expect it! i found that out when i had three females in a 5 gallon which ate the babies shortly after :( you can also add a few shrimp and a mystery snail (just make sure your fish dont pick at them!)
Go to a book store and get this book (the simple guide to freshwater aquariums)by David E. Boruchowitz. This book will thing guide you though every thing will need from lightng, tank size, cleaning is is an excellent book to read to decide what tank size would be best for you and how to properly care for it once you have your tank setup
go to the library/pet store/book store, and buy a beginners guide to fish keeping. Like Freshwater Fish for dummies or something. That will give you what you need to know. The people answering this question can not and will not give you all the answers to fish keeping. Go and do some real research before buying anything thats not a book ; ).
that being said, there is allot of good advice on the beginners sights you can find around. Just don’t forget these simple guidelines that people starting out don’t usually remember:
* the people at the store DON’T know what there talking about in allot of cases. No one knows everything and you should always research what your buying before you buy it.
*Impulse buying of fish is the dimmest thing you can do.
*don’t buy a fish that needs a tank bigger than the one you have, and expect to size up as it grows. Some people pull that off well, most never get around to it and end up killing there pets.
*Get things from more than one source.
GOLDFISH ARE HORRIBLE! BAD GOLDFISH! Stick to your tropicals. I have had tons of luck with the basics like Mollies, Neon’s, Catfish, Bala Sharks, Pleco’s, Betta, ect. I have 6 Chiclids in my tank right now. They are really hardy and easy to care for. Go cheap on your first fish, don’t go spending like 20 dollars a fish. Most of those are all under ten. Also I’ve never followed the rules, follow your own experiances and you’ll be fine. Its all about trial and error.
