You can have any number of female Bettas, so long as they are kept in odd numbers. 2 is asking for trouble.
10-gallons is minimum for multiple Bettas. In that you can have 3. Up it to 20-gallons, 5-7 would work.
It is best to add all of the girls at once. If that's not possible, you need to rearrange all of the tank's decor whenever a new Betta is added. This makes the established Bettas think that they're in a new space, and discourages hierarchy based aggression.
Your tank should be well planted, (live or silk plants, no plastic,) and offer lots of caves, driftwood and other hiding places.
Even though female Bettas usually do well with one another, there are a few that just won't be nice. It's always best to have a backup tank or plan in case you find yourself with a brat.
Good luck.

You should have more than 3. Usually about 10 should be in a large tank. If you have two or three, they will become dominant and kill eachother.

I always suggest that it is better to only buy females from the same tank fro better success. 3 is better than 2. One is ok by themselves, but I like to save as many from the store as possible.

2 is a bad number, you should have alot more and even then there is usually trouble, they need alot of hiding spots, there will always be a dominent one, if there is 2 dominent fish one will be killed, i don't like sorority tanks of female betta's because of the stress it puts on all the bettas, i would take the one you got back to the store
