16 January 2010 9 Comments

Ok, so i have a coldwater tank, with a comet, a shubunkin, 2 weather loaches and four leopard danios, the tank is more of a warm water tank than a cold one, is there any chance of a betta fish surviving in it????
if they would work in the tank would any of the fish nnip its tail??
and there is no heater oon the tank
AND my tank is a constant 28*c / 84*f

Oh yeas and i am moving my fish to a bigger tank tomorrow, whihch i am told by the fish shop is perfect if not too big.....

Absolutely not. Even if the tank is more of a "warm water" tank than "cold water", you’re going to risk increased disease of one of the two types. Your goldfish will perish at the hot (to them) temperatures that bettas require (77-79 degrees F).

You also didn’t tell us your tank size – just going by average fish tank owners, I’m going to guess you have these fish in a 10 gallon tank. The goldfish already would need a much larger tank, as the minimum amount of water recommended for goldfish is 20 gallons for the fish goldfish, and 10 gallons for each goldfish after that. The tank is grossly overstocked if this is true, and is still overstocked if you have even a 20 gallon tank. Goldfish are high waste, social fish, while bettas are minimal waste, low tolerance for ammonia, and solitary fish. They aren’t compatible at the basic level of physiology, let alone temperament.

Why don’t you stop by Ultimatebettas.com? If you’ve never had a betta fish before we can help you pick out a wonderful home for it, or even help you with your current set-up!

Betta’s in the wild are used to 80-90 degree fresh water temperatures but have adapted. As long as it’s not too cool like around 45-55 degrees they will be fine. If you have a tank with a light in it, most do, the betta may hang out at the top for the warmth but yes, it’d be fine!

Follow Okodokuo’s advice. He’s exactly right. The loaches and the danios really require a heater in order to thrive.

No, I once put a betta with my goldfishes and koi and lasted 2 weeks. Remember bettas inside a big fishtank will try to hide from other big fishes getting close to it. I know they fight, but towards another type of bigger fish they will tend to hide and remember flakes is not really part of their diet.
