Bettas CAN be kept with other species of fish (but NOT Guppies, Danios, Gouramis, Tiger Barbs and some species of Tetra, mainly because the Betta would get beat up, not the other way round).

HOWEVER, your tank is too small for any other fish tank mate. For a Betta with other fish you need 10-15 gallons or more.

In that 2.5g you're best keeping the Betta alone. The fish is not lonely at all, in fact he's fine alone, male Bettas are solitary creatures after all.

Siamese fighting fish from Thai land originally are best left alone and there is no such thing as lonely when it comes to a Betta that prefers to be alone in his domain period. He is the king of his domain. This fish will fight with any other fish in its territory. This fish is highly territorial. Just put a mirror in front of his tank and you'll see what I mean. In my observations even a female betta will attack a male and vice-versa and ruin each others fins period. Know how a shark is territorial ? Exactly.
Bettas eat tubiflex worms, blood worms, pellets for betta's, betta flakes
Technically a Betta can survive perfectly in a 1.5 gallon tank as long as you keep up with his needs, 7.0 PH, water conditioner, a heated tank of 78-88 degrees, now at your option you may however use a larger tank of up to ten gallons but remember this, these fish are top breathers, they do not require a tank to be rich in oxygen, so if he has to swim too far to reach the top for air, he could suffocate.

Betta fish are also known as Japanese fighting fish so i would not put him in with any other fish, he might fight with them. and i think that he is used to being alone, since most betas are sold/kept alone. You should get the proper food depending on the type of fish, like for tropical fish get tropical fish food, and so on.

Betta can be kept with other fish NOT guppy like "Andrew" said, quite frankly i disagree with most the stuff he said!

I have kept Betta fish for quite a while now and i have noticed that nearly every beta has a different. I would never put them with fish with long, flowing tails - Fancy guppy's for example. Also i wouldn't put them with small fish like neon tetra or harlequins. Also no fish that look like Betta's. I the reason for not having fish that look like them or fish with flowing tails is that they are very territorial and aggressive with there own kind. A 2.5 gallon fish tank is quite small,if i were you i would get an apple snail. They are totally different to fish and also help cleaning up any mess in the tank, other than that you fish tank is fully stocked!! By the way it is not possible for a betta to be lonely, in the wild they live alone untill breeding season. So you dont have to feel sorry for your Betta, i know its a sad thought of they being alone but they really do not mind being alone and probably prefer it.

Fish food - Bettas can eat normal fish food, you dont have to by special food for them. If you buy some tropical fish food then nearly any type of tropical fish should eat it!!

EDIT : Male betta fish should not be kept with another male betta, they will also fight!! just thought i might tell you because someone posted it would be okay. Its a NO-DO

some Fancy guppies, or a tetra, or a guarmi, those are good fish, barbs and some sharks need at least 3 or four of there kind (which is too many for your tank). put like two more fish at the most. i know it seems like you can fit more and they'll be okay but seriously 3 fish is still really cramped for a 2.5 gallon.
Hope that Helped!
