How to Mate Betta Fish

2 October 2009 25 Comments

Getting bettas to spawn can be tricky, and you have to be very careful or you could end up with a dead betta. What you need is a 10 gallon fish tank, and a cheap air driven sponge filter. You don't want any substrate because if you do have it you will lose lots of eggs. Provide plenty of caves for the female to hide from the male. To start the breeding put the male betta in the tank and put the female in a plastic breeder designed for live-bearers. This way they can get used to each other ...

i used to have a male and female and the female had her eggs and then one day the male went crazy and ate the eggs and started chasing the female around so we had to put them in small seperate bowls but then we had to give them away because we were moving and we couldnt bring them because of the ride there they would die on the way but now i have one red male who is really happy being alone instead of with a mate
