Has he recovered from his illness, or did he pass?

He made an amazing recovery. That was right after he’d been brought home from a dollar store (of all places), and he had horrible ammonia poisoning, poor thing…

How is Spot? Can you post an updated video of Spot? That is one of the worst cases of betta abuse I have seen, it’s a wonder he lived from the store!

They do at some smaller 99 cent/dollar stores in NYC, but not at larger national stores. (At least, I hope not.)

hey i bought a betta fish like 2 or 3 days ago from a pet store the betta was all good at first but now all he does is go to the bottom of the dish tank and stay there he only goes up to eat food its like his tail its too heavy for him or something…>.> i don’t think thats the case ..any tips….plz

You need to increase the temp in the tank, the water is to cold so hes going into a sort of hibernated state. The water needs to be ariound 75-80 degrees F.

I do NYC betta resuce (winding down as moving now) and in past worked at city government health department.

I have closed down (city of Manhattan New York) two such sites and here is how.

ALL pet stores must be licensed and show this prominently by the city (vet dept) and take expensive courses and be given them proper homes (which I wonder how does the “VET” in charge of this let any pet store (major) allow bettas to be sold without larger tanks, filter, heaters so on… hmmm money money money.

So when two local “deli” shops had poor bettas in those horrific square “cube” (architect) glass I first got the above information from a manager of a great chinatown aquarium shop, then called my local Humaine Society (who could not help but directed me to the EXACT long and hard to find law) which I printed out and then went to both stores.

One, winter – open doors fish freezing (took photos) and made flyers to hand out to anyone entering the store as well, had them next to coffee and food (illegal) had no signs of license NOR did he have the name (by law) of the idiot making money dumping these things (along with cubes and teeny bowls) all over manhattan (as well as turtles which I used to rescue)…. about 20 violations in all on the spot so he allowed me to take them home.

(try getting a betta, filthy bowl, freezing water out of a cube tank with tiny hole at top – not easy. I had brought my gear.)

They despite my 45 years of experience and expence did not survive – would start to grow fins back but Flexibar Columnar and other bacteria now inside of fish (and meds in diet) well, the immune system I figured after months in these torture chambers (and very cold temps alone would do it) just was too much.

At least they gave it a try were much respected and died in dignity.

The other store was not “compliant” so I made a formal complaint with the city (one has to wait 30 days ) poor fish! Now, I see the cube is out of the window (glaring sun) and I assume the others are gone as well. I can barely go by as I know I will get angry (I stopped shopping there)

Not only did these people over pay the greedy guy selling this (by about 30 bucks) they violated city local laws and maybe state and federal.

    KNOWLEDGE is power.

You can make a difference in getting it stopped at the source.

Each city will have their own version.

But just from some of the excerpts of this law, any one selling fish, must do much to be able to do that… see the following. And if they do not (if allowed to begin with) they are stopped.
    ……………….

Pet stores are licensed by the New York City Health Department, and must comply with the provisions of the New York City Health Code. (See excerpts) Where a pet store is repeatedly cited by the Health Department for Health Code violations, the Department has the authority to hold a hearing to suspend the license to operate. Complaints about pet stores should be directed to the Health Department.

    C. A holder of a permit to keep small animals for sale …., shall maintain and keep for ONE year a record of purchases and sales and /or a record of boarding…..

When (said animal) is purchases, sold, adopted or kept, the permittee shall make an entry in the record which shall contain the name and address of the person from whom it was purchased and of the person to whom it was sold……

The permittee shall, on at least a monthly basis, report to the department on a form furnished by the Department all licensed and unlicensed…..

(just did a google after ages on yahoo search with part of above and found exact law. As you can see one must go through it and extract applicable code)

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/zoo/zoo-animal-healthcode.pdf

It is very hard to find (went to government site (IEEEEEE!) but originally I called the aspca and their legal department gave me the exact law and then I found it.
