Balthier, a happy betta fish.

3 September 2009 17 Comments

This is how a betta TANK should be, fish are not supposed to be kept in bowls. Bettas are tropical fish that live in huge rice paddies, this means they need a heater and a filter (on a cycled tank) and more than 2 gallons of water. they also should't usually be kept with fishes other than peacueful bottom dwellers, and in VERY rare cases communit. They however, should never be kept with other bettas regardless of them being male or female. They are called "siamese fighting fish" for a reason....

Beautiful Betta and I love how your tank is decorated! Perfect for the Betta! Nice balance of plants and a swim through cave which they love! Looks like a Marineland Hex 5tank? I have one of those too. They are great Betta tanks! I wish more people would realize how much happier Bettas are in proper sized tanks with heat and filteration! Keeping them in bowls or with most other fish is wrong. They do not get lonely. Thank you for posting this and hopefully some people will get the right idea.

I’m glad you posted this!!! I’ve always felt sorry for Bettas, the way they are sold in
tiny little sterile bowls as if they were not
    living animals.

    very nice tank
i was reading your description and have one objection. it is possible to keep bettas with other fish if you have a large enough tank. i have seen many times where bettas in 10+ gallon tanks were perfectly happy with other fish like neon tetras. in fact, many times the issue with keeping bettas with other fish is that the other tank mates will nip the bettas fins (since bettas are slow moving). male bettas will only really attack fish that resemble other male bettas with long fins.

u could put other ffish like a guppy

I really wouldnt keep bettas with a guppy. Again, as I said in my previous reply the problem is that bettas have individual characters, but in general will attach long finned, colorful fish like guppies.

  • alessa9 said:

Yes, it is a Marineland hex :)

Yes, I know it is possible, but bettas are very different from one another, and as you may encounter a very mellow betta that does not really care, you may also encounter a mourderous one. I would recommend keeping them with nothing besides cories, ottos, or other peacrful, dull colored bottom dweller.

I disagree however, in keeping them with neon tetras. Tetras are some of the worse tankmates for bettas just because of what you said, they are nippy most of the time.

    Ps edited it for :)

Beautiful betta. You have an excellent home for him. : )

    I once had a betta who did very well in a community with tetras, cherry barbs, corydoras, etc. Alas, the tetras came down with Neon Tetra Disease, which jumped to my betta and killed him too. ;_;

Other bettas I have had (including the current ones) are quite aggressive so I wouldn’t chance them in a community. They are quite happy in their 5 gallon homes with snails for company. : )

nice i planned on getting a 21 litre tank just for 1 betta with a stingray filter and can the filter current be to strong for it?

  • alessa9 said:

You can use the filter, if you feel the current is too strong, you can always place a sponge near the outlet to break the flow.

    Thank you!
