It's my first time in going to have tropical fish - got an excellent tank - beed to purchase the filtration equipment. Bit confused at the articles on the net - some doesn't recommend underwater gravel filters (UGF) and others recommends u use more that one sort, but then some articles recommends using a box filter with UGF. Anybody with some experience and knowledge to share would mean a lot to me!

this tank is not that large so i would recommend using a HOB (hang on back) filter…if you want you can get a cheap one a walmart…aqua tech…with is made by marine land…so its a good brand..only thing it uses bio fiber in place of a bio Wheel…same difference if you ask me…
i would also recommend an air pump and air stones or air tube…(the little bubbles) as it will help with gas exchange in the tank….
I hate under gravel filters for fresh water tanks and will recommend that you not get one….the reason i hate under gravel filter is because the add to much O2 to the substrate…there are bacteria that can remove nitrates from your water but they are anaerobic and live in the substrate and deep in any bog wood in your tank….
also make sure you get a heater and set it to 77F – 80F
I recommend an under-gravel, in fact I swear by them, they only work when coupled with a power filter.
I recommend Penguin and any UGF.
I have been keeping fish for a long, long time, and around 3 times I have tried using UGF’s each time they screwed up and my tank was extremely filthy and created an unlivable environment for my fish. I now use half submerged filters – and my tank has never been cleaner. My fish seemed much happier when I installed the half submersible filter and became more active.
As Graham R said, using An aerator in the tank will prove a very good idea as it does indeed oxygenate the water and the fish enjoy swimming through the bubbles it pumps out. As well as oxygenating the water the bubbles also add a sense of realism to your setup. (Depending on what design you make your tank – e.g. rift lake, estuary etc).
Make sure its a quality filter aswell so it doesn’t break or malfunction. If you live in Australia (might be USA aswell not sure) but a good brand of filter which I have been using and recommending to people like those in your situation is an Aqua One Half Submersible Filter. I have still got one of my older Aqua ones in a goldfish tank for my cousin and it is in perfect working order.
Hope I helped.
