Light is not an absolute must as long as the tank is receiving an ambient light.

The only time a light is a absolutely needed if your tank is planted. Then the ambient light light is not enough for photosynthesis.

No unless you plan to use live plants but they do help alot with check ups if i didn't have my light there is no way I would be able to diagnose my fish for diseases

If you want plants.

You dont NEED one, but why wouldnt you want one? Its best to give fish a night and day just like we get. If you have natural light, that would work too. Youd just need to be aware that algae growth is more likely to make an occurance.

Aquariums have lights for 2 reasons.

To grow plants, and so you can see your fish better.

If you dont have live plants then lights are not essential, and you can actually use pretty much any sort of light. Even a couple of normal energy save flouro lamps in a normal light fitting will do.

Technically the fish can live fine by just the normal room lights, but you cant really see them very well.
