Koi Pond Construction: What To Do And What Not To Do

25 May 2009 170 views No Comment

What you need to understand is that Koi ponds aren’t just some holes in the ground where you store and keep your pets. To make them work well and sustain your pets, consider different kinds of things as you start planning for its construction. Follow the simple rules that will make sure you’re not going to end up with a costly hole filled with nothing but dead fish!

The primary thing you need to consider is to have a professional build your pond, unless, of course, you already have knowledge in construction, outdoor landscaping and fish keeping. You might think that building the pond yourself will save you money, but this kind of notion could not take your further from the case!

If your pond is not built properly right from the start, what’ll happen is that you’re going to end up spending a great deal of cash on fixing problems that may occur in the future. With an improper set-up of your pond, you won’t be able to save your fish from illness!

Keep in mind that professionals will always give you the things you want. They may give their inputs when it comes to a decision making, but they will always do what you want them to do. They are completely blameless if ever your pond will fail due to factors such as location, size, etc. Also, beware of those very cheap quotes, because they may cut corners that can really cause you problems later (while these come in differently, there are not significant differences between them).

The fact of the matter is that these ponds are, by no means, water troughs for animals or swimming pools, and that’s why much care should be taken in building and planning your pond. Although it may cost you more money than building those typical swimming pools, the rewards you can achieve are really much greater! Children and other pets can cause problems to your pond, that’s why it’s important that you should keep them out.

Children can cause a chemical imbalance and major problems like leaks if they take the liberty of swimming in the pond. With pets, it may be okay to have them around your pond, but they may mess with the filtration system and chase your fish around! That’s why it’s best to keep them away from the pond.

Keep in mind that like any other pets that people have, other issues may come up that may need your special attention. You can take some extra time to clear up those infections caused by algae; if you’re going out for a vacation, ensure that somebody with the proper knowledge and skills will maintain your pond for you to make it readily available for you when you return; and you can also visit your vet.

Once the pond is completely made, most of them are going to be permanent, which means that you can’t decide within 2 or 3 weeks that you want your pond constructed in the frontyard rather than in the backyard. Take the time you need to carefully plan each aspect of your pond, considering the size requirements and placement. Once the pond is built, you can only do a little to change it, and this is something that you have to always remember. Make sure that you have the necessary time to do it, as this can demand a lot of work from you.
