How often can i put aquarium salt in my tropical fish tank?

29 May 2009 3 Comments

My fish have recently had anchor worm, whitespots and really red gills. I put some aquarium salt into my fish tank, which is a 14 gallon tank and my fish are beginning to look a lot healthier. Oh yeh...i have 10 fish in my tank.

What i want to know is how often do i add the salt to my tank?

salt doesnt evaporate so it should only be added when you do a water change

The first thing to look at is the amount of fish you have in your aquarium, for the size of tank you have too many fish.
I would bet the reason your fish are sick is because the nitrate and ammonia levels are sky high. Adding salt to treat sickness wont be needed.

Can you give us a bit more info?
Have you cycled the tank prior to adding your fish to it?
What are the 10 different types of fish you have?
Waht are your nitrate and amonia readings?
How long has your aquarium been set up?

I am thinking from what you have said there is most probably a problem with your water quality with possibly some parasite issues. Its not adviseable to add more salt until you can let us know the types of fish you have in there.
