Pet catfish are regarded as the most varied group of fish. They can survive in coastal areas as well as in freshwater. The barbels around the mouth are an important feature and most of them have bony plates or toxic spines on their body. With more than 2000 known species pet catfish are most popular amongst fish loving people.
Mochokidae aquarium catfish are well known for its up-down turning feature and attractive markings on the body. They can grow up to 35 cm in length and are one of the most common fish found in aquariums. Doradidae or talking fish are another unique aquarium pet catfish that has the ability of producing sounds by using their pectoral fins. This catfish can grow up to 75 cm and is best suited for a community aquarium.
The red tailed aquarium pet catfish with its white belly and other unique features can be another good choice for the larger aquarium. This catfish has the ability to grow fast so you are going to need a huge tank. The Adolfoi Cory Catfish is another option for aquariums that are well planted. The Colombian shark, Elegant Cory cat, Giraffe Nosed catfish, Otocinclus catfish, Panda Cory cat, Peppered Cory cat, etc are other options.
The list is bit lengthy and you can choose a catfish to your own liking. Most of them are omnivorous and you can feed those with diets that include quality flakes, live worms, pieces of small fish, and other live foods. The different species of catfish differ in size and character, but the smaller species called as Corydoras or Cory cats are mostly preferred in the aquariums.
As an aquarist, you can enjoy raising pairs of aquarium pet catfish of the same species. They are quite different from the common fish and in many countries around the world catfish is also a popular food, although i wouldn’t necessarily recommend adding these beautiful fish to your diet! Aquarium pet catfish are amazing and can become an important pet of your aquarium.
